The overwhelming majority of organizational change efforts fail (more than 70%). There are numerous reasons why these efforts fail: Internal issues (lack of management support, poor business systems, and weak integration, etc.) to External issues (general economic conditions, industry competition, etc.). The author insists that there is a far simpler, fundamental reason why the majority of efforts fail. The very activities that the organization and its people undertake often undermine the change effort. Department, divisions (and people that comprise them) are all acting as they understand the activities to be (or whoever is in charge) with a lack of understanding for the whole, causing the change effort to fail.
